Book Club review “The Mermaid of the Black Conch”

The Mermaid of the Black Conch by Monique Roffey won the Costa prize in 2021. It is a fable written in a magical realism style which describes an
encounter between a lonely fisherman and a mermaid who is drawn by his singing. The setting is a small Caribbean island and the story is told in
liltingly lyrical and rhythmic prose. Some of us found the parts written in
Creole patois a bit of an effort but the strength of the story hooks the reader and encourages them to persevere.
